Mostly impossible \u2013 and often unbearable, 13 March<\/a>). Our charity started as a small team of volunteers building a wifi network for refugees and support workers in the Calais \u201cJungle\u201d encampment \u2013 connecting and helping more than 5,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Equality and equity are not possible without equal access to the internet. About <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/oralevidence\/12696\/html\/\">92% of jobs are only advertised online<\/a>, and the government ambition was for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/health-secretary-sets-out-ambitious-tech-agenda\">75% of adults in England to be using the NHS app<\/a> by March 2024. Even access to news requires the three Ds: digital confidence, data and devices \u2013 a term I coined for a digital inclusion programme with BT in 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalpovertyalliance.org\/news-updates\/19-million-face-digital-poverty-deloitte-report\/\">According to the Digital Poverty Alliance<\/a>, millions of people in the UK are affected by digital exclusion.<\/p>\n<p>As well as a rights and social justice issue, digital inclusion makes economic sense. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsfoundation.org\/insights\/the-economic-impact-of-digital-inclusion-in-the-uk\/\">report <\/a>by the Centre for Economics and Business Research finds that \u201cinvestment of \u00a31.4bn could reap economic benefits of \u00a313.7bn for UK plc\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>All parties and government departments need to send representatives to the all-party parliamentary group for digital inclusion. The next meeting \u2013 a roundtable on a long-term settlement for digital inclusion \u2013 will be chaired by Julie Elliott MP and take place on Wednesday 20 March.<\/p>\n<p>As a member, I can testify that scant few MPs attend these sessions. The House of Lords currently has more to say on digital inclusion than our elected government representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Our next government needs to put a digital strategy, including the (soon to be published) first set of minimum digital living standards, by Prof Simeon Yates with teams at Liverpool and Loughborough universities, at the top of its to-do list.<br \/><strong>Claire Marshall<\/strong><br \/><em>Director at <\/em><em>Jangala, a tech charity<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Your article highlights the increasing exclusion of many poorer people from digital access (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2024\/mar\/17\/half-uk-families-excluded-modern-digital-society-study\">Nearly half of UK families excluded from modern digital society, study finds, 17 March<\/a>). It rightly describes the enormous damage that this does to life chances and the ability to function successfully in 21st-century society.
